Starting in 2006, the United States Mint began offering a collectible uncirculated version of the American Platinum Eagle. These Burnished Platinum Eagles were sold directly by the US Mint to collectors, similar to the collectible proof coins. The unexpected and obscure offering experienced low sales, which translates into attractively low mintages.
The collectible uncirculated Platinum Eagles are created through a specialized minting process, which differs from the process used to produce regular bullion coins. The coins are also struck on specially burnished blanks and carry the "W" mint mark to designate West Point mintage. The coins are referred to as "Burnished Platinum Eagles" or "Uncircualted Platinum Eagles".
The Burnished Platinum Eagles have another distinction from the bullion coins. The reverse design used for the coins is the same unique rotating design used on the collectible proof coins. For 2006, the design featured the Legislative Muse. For 2007, the design featured a Bald Eagle representing the legislative branch. For 2008, the design featured Lady Justice.
The collectible uncirculated version of the American Platinum Eagle was announced discontinued at the end of 2008. As such, these coins represent a unique three year subset of the series, which may garner a specialized following in later years.
